Zablace is a small fishing settlement, situated along the coast, 8 km south of Sibenik. It was first mentioned in 1432 –medieval Zablace was first known for its salt works from which today only names remained: Velika jezera (Big lakes) and Mala solina (Small salt works). These lakes are very popular among people in healing the rheumatisms because they are rich in therapeutic mud.
Zablace was twice completely destroyed during the Turkish invasions in Dalmatia – in 1510 and 1537. That was the reason why the main occupation of the inhabitants – the salt production – ceased production. Then the Turks retreated, and the village was restored. Fishing, agriculture and cattle breeding were starting to develop. Later many of the inhabitants emigrated to America. Today, tourism is very important part of the economy of this village.
Zablace is unique for its unusual, but pleasant mixture of the old fishermen houses and luxurious villas built by the descendants of the American emigrants. Tasty homegrown food and recently caught fish together with the excellent homemade wines make the offer of the local restaurants. Surrounded by pine trees, Zablace is ideal for a quiet family holiday. Accomodation is possible in private rooms, apartments and in camping site situated in a thick pine forest. Spacions concrete and pebble beaches receive many sun bathers (especially from Sibenik). Open sea is very favourable for wind surfing. There is a small, St. John´s church built in 1837, and 2 shops, 3 restaurants, caffe bars and excellent pizzeria.
Numerous sporting facilities, and various entertainment till small hours are organised only 500 m away, in the Solaris tourist complex, considered one of the best equipped and maintained tourist centers on the Adriatic. Summer festivals such as the children´festival and the chanson festival take place in the nearby city of Sibenik. There are buses driving from Zablace to Sibenik and back every hour. We also recommed you to visit 2 national parks – Krka and Kornati, near Sibenik. Other tourist attractions are 3 fortresses in Sibenik, and one 300 m away from Zablace – St´Nicholas. This Renaissance fortress is situated at the entrance to the Canal of St. Anthony, which connects the bay to the sea.
It is very easy to walk there from Zablace and very interesting to see.
Zablace is just 1 km away from Zlarin, an island with a rich maritime tradition, known far and wide for its coral, and deuse pine forests. |
